The 2014 EGSAMP Summer School coincides with the 30th Elena Summer School, launched in 1984 by Tzotcho Boiadjiev, who is the founder of the “Bulgarian School for Medieval philosophy”. Elena - a picturesque small town in the Balkan Mountains - was and remains the laboratory of the Bulgarian school. On several occasions Elena functioned as an international summer school, so in 2001, 2005 and 2008 as one of the first EGSAMP-Summer Schools. This year’s EGSAMP Summer School builds on the research tradition of the Elena seminars. In the course of an intensive dialogue, the points of intersection and confrontation of the great Medieval traditions, and in particular the Latin and Byzantine, will be discussed on the basis of the “translation technique” of the Bulgarian school and beyond.

International Colloquium: The Manuscript Tradition of Avicenna’s Kitab al-Shifa’: The Current State of Research and Future Prospects

pisa_colloquium_22-24_09_10.jpegThe research on the transmission of the Arabic text of Avicenna’s  Kitab al-Shifa’ (Book of the Cure), one of the most important, extensive and influential works of Arabic philosophy in the Middle Ages, is still at a preliminary stage. The aim of the colloquium is to assess the state of the art on this subject; to outline an inventory of the known manuscripts of this work and of the modalities of its indirect tradition; and to fix the guidelines of the method conducive to a future critical edition. Towards this aim, the colloquium focuses on the manuscript dissemination of the single parts of the Shifa’, the codicological study of some of its best manuscripts, and the on-going projects of digital libraries and publications related to Avicenna’s philosophy. A special “didactic” session is devoted to students of Arabic language and philosophy. The interaction among specialists of Arabic logic, natural philosophy and metaphysics, experts of Avicenna’s thought and its reception, and connoisseurs of Arabic codicology – an attempt of a new methodology of scholarly communication – is the necessary starting-point to ground the research on the Arabic text of the Shifa’ on a properly scientific basis.Progam-Download: pisa_colloquium_22-24_09_10.pdf
